Of course it rains the day after I wash my car

PhotoGrid_1359057859837

So I washed my car (to the best of my ability) last night and OF COURSE it is raining buckets all day today.

Go figure right?

Some before and after shots. I tried to get as much tar off the tires. It was easier said than done. The back tires weren’t too bad but the front ones were HARD. And I need to buy some car wax soon because it seems like washing your car is pointless without it.

There was some damage to the paint but that can’t be helped for now.

PhotoGrid_1359068589069

And here are some pictures from the rain today. There was this cat just sitting in the rain and I tried to get it to come out so I could take care of it but it wouldn’t budge from its spot so I just had to leave. I had no way of getting around the fence it was in.

It’s cleared up a lot right now but thank god I’ve been carrying around my umbrella lately because otherwise I would have been soaked MORE than I already was with the sideways rain and everything.

It’s just another thing in life. The world HAS to rain on you when you’ve washed your car. It is what it is.

Extreme Couponing…Fail

extreme-couponing-1024x585

I was watching extreme couponing yesterday and it kind of intrigued me yet at the same time made me sick to my stomach.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS SOMEONE GOING TO DO WITH 94 PACKETS OF CROUTONS OR BOXES OF CAT TREATS WITHOUT A GOD DARN CAT?

People without children will stock up on “cheap” diapers. They will store toilet paper under their children’s beds and some of them will even design their own shelving units to make sure no can expires on the shelf.

extreme-couponing

If these people aren’t hoarders, I don’t know what they are.

So I thought I’d look up some coupons last night and literally after 2 minutes I was bored out of my GOD DAMN mind.

I mean the only time I would think this would be a good idea is if:

A. The world was ending and I had a bomb shelter I could put all this stuff into

or

B. There was an imminent depression coming and there wouldn’t be any food left on the shelves. I guess this could work if there was a zombie apocalypse coming too…

BUT STILL! THESE LADIES ARE CRAZY!

WHAT DOES ONE DO WITH 75 BOXES OF CEREAL???

“Oh yeah I just saved my family $40,000 last year in groceries.” Really? Really people?

I can’t even be bothered to cut coupons let alone remember that I have them the next time I go grocery shopping. Not to mention, it’s embarrassing pulling out 2,500 coupons in A SINGLE TRANSACTION or going around a supermarket pulling 6 carts all by yourself.

One couple was at the supermarket for 5 HOURS! 5 HOURS! I don’t want to be there more than 30 minutes let alone 5 GOD DAMN FREAKIN HOURS! They put a limit on how many coupons each person could use so this lady had the nerve to CALL HER FRIEND so that she could COME TO THE SUPERMARKET and buy shit for her.

Wouldn’t it have been easier to just COME BACK? Aren’t you wasting precious money and time by just BEING at the market for that long?

These people let their friends and family go “shopping” in their little home made mini marts.

So anyways…when I went to the grocery store I tried to be a LITTLE more conscious of what was on sale or not. And no I did not bother to bring any coupons with me. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a Hawaiian newspaper with coupons in it.

I saved $14.04! Which is 13%! Whoop de doo! Now I can…go to Starbucks and get my small soy hot chocolate 4 more times then I would have? *Shrug*

PhotoGrid_1358901318055

The Orange Creme Cookies weren’t on sale but I’ve never seen them before  so I thought I’d be adventurous today and try something new! I hope they’re as good as they look. Sorta reminds me of Mexican Wedding Cookies / Russian Tea Cookies. I’ll let you guys know how they are.

We’ll see if I can get into using coupons or not. Do you guys use coupons?

Do most people use bring in coupons?

All I do is eat…

154194_10200353243210507_1820372036_n

So yesterday I woke up a little early so I could go get some breakfast pastries for Mark, myself and Olivo.

I drove down to Liliha Bakery which is pretty close by if I use the freeway. I’m sure there are other bakeries in the neighborhood that I need to try out but I always get so paranoid about trying to go to new places because I’m always worried I’m going to overshoot the actual location and have to make SEVERAL loops around the block to find the place AND/OR there is no parking ANYWHERE!

I have a legitimate reason to be paranoid because I feel like not having a parking space and overshooting a location is all I do in my car. I’m usually VERY good with directions but everything is on a one way street that like either leads to a freeway on ramp (that I do not want to go on) OR there is no opportunity to turn around to get back to where I was.

I got some donuts, a chocolate cream puff, an eclair, an apple turnover AND MY FAVORITE a sweet potato crescent. I swear I only get like two things at this place. The blueberry scone and the sweet potato crescent. It seriously reminds me of my time in Japan and I just love it!

Also testing out some photo apps on my phone. I feel as though I’m not sufficiently Asian enough to have already mastered every photo app out there to make my skin brighter or my eyes wider but I’m working on it! Hahaha.

But after chillaxing at home Olivo and I decided to take a walk down to Chinatown to look around and to see if there was anything worth buying from the Macy’s that is closing.

399005_10200354218474888_1607575987_n

I was SO excited once I got to the little Chinese markets. I felt like I was back home again! They had all my favorite foods!

I bought two packets of instant noodles that Olivo SAID were spicy (because I love spicy food) BUT they weren’t spicy at all! She lied! I had to put a shit ton of Sriracha into it before I could eat it.

Also bought Strawberry Cakes! Olivo brought me all different flavors and I just loved them! They’re kind of like Fig Newtons but better! Tastier with a wide range of flavors!

I also bought a bag of peeled roasted chestnuts and needless to say I had finished it way too quickly. I absolutely LOVE chestnuts! I think I could live off of them if I had to. My mother and grandmother always bring them when they come to visit but they never last very long. But now that I know I can get it in Chinatown I am definitely going to go by more often!

AND I also bought Almond Jello Mix! They serve it as dessert in Chinese restaurants and it is SO DELICIOUS! I usually don’t care for Jello but I’ve always loved getting this at the end of every Chinese meal! I can’t wait to try it at home!!!

PhotoGrid_1358724217480

And this morning we watched the end of the Lakers vs Raptors game as well as both NFL games. And of course I wake up to the Lakers losing…to a team that is not even anywhere near playoffs! It just hurts to be a Lakers fan right now… I think I might start up a:

“NO DWIGHT 2013”

campaign soon.

But I also made some Cinnamon Tortilla crisps this morning since I hadn’t in a long time. Also made an experimental tortilla pizza with salsa, parmesan, mozzarella and pepperoni and it turned out pretty good! The only issue was that the salsa I used was SUPER SPICY so the pizza ended up being super spicy so I just need to be mindful of that next time.

I can’t believe both the 49ers AND the Ravens are going to the Superbowl. I guess you got your birthday wish Austin.

We’ll get there next year Broncos! I believe in you Peyton!

After that Mark and I went to Walmart and got our groceries for the week and when we came home Olivo was back so we decided to go out and get dinner.

PhotoGrid_1358754440945 (1)

Olivo wanted to get a Loco Moco so I thought we could try Like Like Drive Inn. I’ve always driven by it but I’ve never been there so I’m glad I had an excuse to go. Olivo got the Loco Moco and I got the Oxtail which came with a soup, salad, drink and dessert!

Surprisingly my dish was pretty good. I do love Oxtail and I haven’t had any since I was in Hong Kong. The dish itself came with mashed potatoes and corn (which I also very much love). I gave the salad to Olivo since I despise the very existence of salad and I had the spinach soup as an appetizer. The soup wasn’t bad but I’m not quite sure what to think about it. It was…different. And for dessert I asked for a recommendation and she brought me the blueberry ice cream. I usually don’t like ice cream but it was actually really flavorful and surprisingly smooth.

I really do need to start back at the gym…

Korean BBQ & 3 Year Anniversary

2013-01-17_14-24-07_486

On Thursday it was Mark & I’s “3 years since we’ve met” anniversary so I invited all my friends out to celebrate!

Mark told me to get 60 beers so I bought 5 cases. Since I don’t drink I didn’t know what people would like so I kind of picked everything…and it ended up being WAY too much beer but it’s all good.

2013-01-17_20-41-43_879

We all ate a lot and had a ton of fun! It’s just like my Korean BBQ outings in LA~ I seriously felt like I was back home again.

Hawaii ain’t so bad after all. Making new friends definitely helps a lot too.

385235_563912944703_667138102_n

We were going to go to karaoke afterwards but a lot of people couldn’t make it so we decided to postpone it till next time, which is fine. I had school the next day anyways.

Plato’s Closet – Honolulu

2013-01-17_13-47-21_535
So I went and checked out Plato’s Closet so that I could do a review for the University Newspaper. This is the first Plato’s Closet and buy/sell vintage/consignment/brand store in this neck of the woods and I loved it!

Here is the information for the location:

Plato’s Closet

1161 S. Beretania
Honolulu, HI 96814

Hours: Mon-Sat 10 am-8 pm & Sun 12 pm – 5 pm

Telephone #: (808) 523-8885

Credit Cards: Yes

Parking: Private Lot

2013-01-17_13-48-27_349

Here is what I wrote for the draft. They’ll edit it before it goes in the paper but I say what I wrote is good enough for my blog!

Being from Los Angeles I love thrift stores and consignment shops so I knew that I had to give this place a visit. Very much like Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange, Plato’s Closet offers a variety of name brand clothing at more than reasonable pricing. It was like every college girl’s dream! Tons of outfits to choose from, all in either new or slightly used condition, with more than affordable prices. I would say shopping at Plato’s Closet is a lot cheaper than shopping at Forever 21 with a better selection of styles for both men and women. Plato’s Closet has done very well in the states and it was about time that they opened one in Honolulu. All the employees were more than helpful and very friendly as well. And for those of you who are worried about parking they have a private lot right in front of the store and for those students without cars it’s only about a 1.7 mile walk from campus.

The store itself is packed wall to wall with clothing and accessories. And the atmosphere is very welcoming as every customer is greeted as they walk through the door. Whether you are looking for shoes for a friend’s wedding or a clubbing outfit for the weekends, this is definitely the place to go. I saw plenty of clothes with the tags still attached selling for a mere fraction of what the original retail price was. I saw Women’s Air Jordan’s from $12-$21, a new Bebe dress for $18 and even Betsey Johnson purses for half what they would charge at Ross. And of course I couldn’t leave the store without picking up a few things for myself.

The only downside to Plato’s Closet would be to potential sellers. I have read reviews as well as asked people what their experience has been with selling their items to Plato’s Closet and more people have been disappointed with the amount of product that the store chooses to buy and for how much. Because the store sells their merchandise for such a low price it is hard for sellers to get what they think is fair for their new or gently used items. If you just want to get rid of some clothes or need quick cash then it might not hurt giving Plato’s Closet a try but most people have just found it easier to donate their unwanted items to Goodwill. I am sure that as they get more business they will be open to buying more from customers as times go on but I’ve heard that they have been pretty picky about what they choose to purchase from customers.

But overall, I had a great experience at Plato’s Closet and I can’t wait to go back soon to see what new things have come in. It’s refreshing to see a store that is affordable to the general public and to college students like myself.

And here’s what I got this time around. I picked out two dresses that I KNOW that I did NOT need to try on because I just had to have them!

I didn’t look at all the clothes or go through each rack because I knew this trip was more for school work than for pleasure but I’m sure I’ll be back there soon enough. There were sneakers and bags that I wanted but I knew that I had to pace myself.

I just need to keep reminding myself…I NEED TO SAVE FOR LAW SCHOOL!

It hasn’t been working TOO well but I’m trying. Slowly but surely. (Don’t call me Shirley!)

But anyways…

The first dress I fell in love with at first glance! And it’s by one of my favorite designers in LA!

The store on Melrose is called Voom and this lady makes all her clothes by hand! And they’re usually WAY too expensive for me to even consider buying anything. Her store MIGHT have closed down because of it. But I’m psyched to get a hold on this dress because I didn’t even know she had designs LIKE this.

2013-01-18_23-07-38_220
Excuse all the wrinkles.

But isn’t it just adorable?! When I saw the old school hand stitched puppies on there I KNEW this was for me!

I used to LOVE embroidery and stitch work so whenever I see dish towels or clothing with it, I can’t help but love it even more!

Paid $14 for a $100-$200 dress!!!

The next dress fits amazingly on me and the back is to die for!

2013-01-18_23-09-06_489

And guess what ladies?

It’s a Wet Seal dress! …I know right?

2013-01-18_23-09-40_497

And it only cost me $8!

I’m so happy with both dresses that I got and hopefully they’ll like my review too!

Yay for thrift store finds! Woo hoo!

Jan 16 Homemade Pizza Night!

2013-01-16_13-26-13_850

Sorry this post is a couple days late. I’ve been busy with school and stuff but I said I would post it so here it is.

My friend brought me this Choco Banana Flavored Pocky so I took it to school with me as a snack.

I think I like it? It was something new and unusual to say the least. It had an interesting flavor to it. That’s for sure.

And I decided, while on my quest to becoming a better cook, to try and make homemade pizza for once.

2013-01-16_18-21-36_334
It took me a hell of a long time to find all the ingredients in the supermarket because they’re so spread out everywhere but with the help of a very patient and nice deli worker I was able to get everything that I needed. I need to pick up some thyme the next time around but all in all it turned out pretty good! It was a pretty simple and straight forward recipe and I didn’t really have to worry about messing up too much.

So here is what I did~

1. Preheat the oven to 450F.

2. Cut the Italian sausage into manageable sizes and cook on stove until browned and then take off and let it cool.

3. Spread the tomato sauce on the premade pizza crust leaving 1 1/2 inch for the crust. Then season with salt, pepper, oregano, basil and you can/should use thyme if you have it. If you don’t it’s okay too.

4. Spread an even layer of Mozzarella cheese on the sauce and then top with Pepperoni and Italian Sausage.

5. Put the pizza in the oven and let bake for 8-10 minutes or until crust is brown and crispy.

And then it should be good to go!

2013-01-16_18-39-53_447

Excuse the finger shot. It happens. What are you gonna do?

I ended up making two pizzas and now that I kind of know what I’m doing, I’m going to make pizzas more often! Tomato basil pizza here I come!!!!

It’s just such a pain to drive to the supermarket in Hawaii. I swear if I drive down one more one way street I am going to lose my GOD DAMN MIND! …If I haven’t already.

2013-01-16_18-41-25_762

Got some Ohagi from Ala Moana so I could have it as dessert! I love this stuff!

For those of you who don’t know Ohagi is a Japanese treat that is usually served during Obon and it is made out of a sweet rice ball in the middle with a red bean coating on the outside. It is delicious!

I’ll do more sports coverage and stuff soon too. I think I’ve just been bummed since the Broncos lost and since the Lakers have been doing just horrendously. It is what it is. You win some and you lose some.

Nothing like some Mexican Corn and Peanut Butter Crunch cookies…

1358270376739

My mother sent me a picture of my baby Wolfgang yesterday.

Isn’t he so precious? I just LOVE my big baby.

So yesterday Olivo went to school with me to check out the campus while I had my one class for the day.

I actually enjoyed my Science Fiction class yesterday. We got to discuss King Solomon’s Mines by H. Rider Haggard and I totally got to rip this girl’s ideas TO SHREADS! So I was pretty happy.

What? She said something stupid without thinking. She gets what she deserves.

2013-01-15_12-14-48_276

After that Olivo and I went to The Tea Farm near campus. I really love the tea there so I had to take her since she’s a tea fanatic.

I had the Green Tea Lemonade, like I always do, and it was DELICIOUS!

If you have time you should check the place out. It has a simple yet pleasing interior design, a shelf full of books for customers to read from and exchange with if they like, food options and of course, delicious tea! If you’re in Honolulu, you MUST check it out!

I’m pretty sure I’ll write a complete Yelp review soon. I feel like I’m about to pass out right now so I’ll put it off till tomorrow.

And for those of you who are curious, here is my Yelp link:

serialprincess.yelp.com

I have reviews for places in Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco as well as some that are scattered here and there within the continental US!

After that we took a trip to the post office and I mailed a box of cookies to my friend Kana, a Christmas gift that I had to exchange for a nephew and some post cards for friends. I love the post office but I hate it. Sending mail just costs an arm and a leg. It always makes me cringe and die a little bit on the inside…

Decided to make Mexican food so I made Chicken Quesadillas and some Mexican corn on the cob! I forgot to buy the lime so it wasn’t as AMAZING as it could have been but I was pretty happy with how it turned out. First time trying to make it and I’m glad it worked out…for the most part. I’ll remember to buy limes next time though.

I had to use Parmesan instead of Cotija cheese because I doubt I could get any of that in Hawaii.

Here is the recipe I used if anyone is curious.

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons mayonnaise (fat free is fine)
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice (optional)
2 tablespoons finely grated parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 ears corn, shucked

Directions:

1. Prepare grill.

2. Combine mayo and juice (if using) in a small bowl.

3.Combine cheese and seasonings in another small bowl.

4. Place corn on grill rack that has been sprayed with cooking spray.

5. Grill corn 12 minutes or until tender, turning frequently.

6. Remove from grill and brush with mayo mixture, and sprinkle with cheese mixture.

7. Serve immediately.

2013-01-15_19-09-07_559

Also made some Peanut Butter Crunch Cookies for the first time using the recipe on the box.

2013-01-15_21-09-41_259

I’ll post a recipe up soon! I love you box recipes!!!

‘The Walking Dead’ Game Review

64634_10200337206609602_1177260791_n

I wrote a review for the ‘Walking Dead’ video game by Telltale games for my University paper and they published it today!

Hooray! Hoorah!

Here is a link to the online version of the article.

I’ll post the article on here as well!

Game review: ‘The Walking Dead’

Zombies and apocalyptic themes remain popular in the video game world today, but if you’re tired of the run-and-gun gameplay typical of the genre, Telltale Games has taken advantage of the popularity of “The Walking Dead” television series and created a video game that will satisfy any zombie fanatic – even those who aren’t fans of the show.

“The Walking Dead” is a decision-based game that is more focused on actions and emotions than the typical first-person shooter. It is available for platforms such as iOS, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and has five episodes that were released between April and November 2012.

While most “Walking Dead” fans are familiar with the characters from the television hit, this particular game is based on the original comic series by Robert Kirkman. Like the show, it has the same basic concept of a zombie wasteland, but also adds new story elements that allow the player to decide the outcomes to each story.

Gamers play from the point of view of Lee, a “criminal” charged with murder – the specific details are kept secret. It is the gamer’s job to choose which path Lee takes – whether it be one of aggressive, brutish behavior or compassion ¬– and if he is to do the right thing in any situation.

Each new decision has lasting consequences and changes the outcome of the overall story. While other action-based games are only fun the first time through, the same cannot be said about “The Walking Dead.” I’ve gone back several times to see what other alternative endings I could encounter, and I’ve watched many “Let’s Play” videos of situations that I haven’t even come close to yet.

Telltale Games has made a thrilling action-based game; players are made to anticipate each cliffhanger and life-changing event. With the use of quick-time events and timed responses, you have no time to zone out or get bored.

The action and situations presented are intensely realistic – whether it be jumping onto rooftops or deciding whom to side with in arguments among the group. I’ve flinched more than a couple of times when exploring unknown territories, having the lives of others solely in my hands and when hit with sudden “walker” attacks. A sense of urgency lurks in the background with risky and uncertain decision-making. Mix this with fear and anticipation, and you’re never sure what could happen next.

At the end of each episode, the game will display statistics of your actions compared to the choices that other gamers have made during the same situations. Were most people good, or did most people choose to sacrifice the safety of others for their own benefit? The outcomes can be surprising.

“The Walking Dead” is definitely one of the best games of 2012 and well worth the investment. It is suspenseful but also has a gripping storyline with developed characters. Fans of the television show, try out the game to get your “Walking Dead” fix before the series returns in February. For those of you who have already enjoyed “The Walking Dead” game series, look out for the second season, set for release sometime in 2013.

Bellows Air Force Beach Park

397618_475047385891475_1992075500_n
We took a little trip to Bellows Air Force Beach Park today and boy was it gorgeous!

It’s a private military beach near Kaneohe in Oahu. The sun was shining, the winds blew a cool breeze.

I actually had a lot of fun. My friend Olivo is visiting from Taiwan so she took most of these beautiful shots of us.

2013-01-11_14-50-08_496

An overall shot of everything.

2013-01-11_17-54-57_926

More shrimp crackers, a bag full of hard candy, Kiki Lala notepaper, bath bombs!

2013-01-11_22-25-29_745

Banana Chocolate Pocky and lots of amazing makeup and creams!

I love Asian makeup! I can’t spend money on makeup because I feel like it is such a waste so whenever someone gets me some I am so excited!

After I picked her up and she got a chance to unpack and rest a little bit we went out for a walk around the neighborhood so she could get her bearings.

2013-01-11_17-18-17_399

I had to stop by Kakaako Kool and get some shaved ice with condensed milk!

Always so delicious.

She had a credit card minimum so I just told the lady to charge me the minimum and that I didn’t need to pick out anything else but she was so nice that she came outside and gave me a bag of white chocolate dipped macadamia nuts that they package there!

2013-01-11_18-02-18_884

After that we went out to dinner. We tried to go to Genius Lounge but it was PACKED! I know it was Friday night but damn! So we walked around for a bit and decided to go to our default place, Fatty’s. I love it there but I was just worried about feeding my Taiwanese friend Chinese food for her first meal here but she liked it there too so it worked out okay.

2013-01-11_19-51-21_745 (1)

I had the spicy beef noodle like always. Yum!

2013-01-11_20-29-20_666

Then we went to Yogurtland for some dessert! Yay for cute Sanrio cups! The pink one says ‘Honolulu’ and the blue one on the right says ‘San Francisco’ on it. I kept some of the spoons they gave out too. But I threw the cups away…I’m not THAT crazy. Lolz.

2013-01-12_10-52-57_449

And I put together everything into a little bowl today so we can all share! Yay!

Now it’s time for some football! Let’s go Broncos!
