I’m back from the dead and writing once again! I’m writing for The Roosevelts so please come check me out over there! And I’ll tag the link every time a new article/post is out!
Thanks you guys!
Much Love, Ayumi
I’ve been getting a little tired of wearing the same clothes everyday so I thought I’d stop by Plato’s Closet after school today to see what I could find and I hit the jackpot!
I would have a lot more clothes to wear but most of my wardrobe consists of little black dresses that don’t work out so well here in Hawaii. It’s too bad but what can you do right?
I ended up getting 5 things for only $17.28! 4 out of the 5 things that I got were half off! So I ended up saving $11.50 in discounts!
And I apologize ahead of time, my phone, however smart it may be, does not take the best photos.
First I got a cat shirt!
I just HAD to have it! I mean, come on, IT HAS CATS ON IT!
I might just wear it as is or I might bedazzle and stud the shit out of it but I haven’t decided yet…
Second I got a tubetop! It’s hard to find one’s that fit when you’re flat chested…it’s sad but true.
Cute summery top perfect for the beach or school. Looks absolutely adorable with a pair of shorts.
Next I got another white tube top. It was my lucky day, believe me.
I haven’t heard of this brand till just now but I found the website and it looks pretty cute!
But apparently it’s only open to Wholesale buyers only. Oh well.
Next is a cute picnic style top.
Brand: Old Navy
These REALLY match my cowboy boots! I love it! Makes me feel all country~
And last but not least is a flower pattern tube top dress! I found 3 tube top articles of clothing on one shopping trip! It’s a miracle!
The second picture is the true color of the fabric, the first picture does it no justice.
Brand: Forever 21
It’s adorable and fits perfectly! Summer time here I come!
I got some great finds and I am so excited! Yay for dressing well on a budget!
So Mark and I went to Target the other day and what do I find?
An Arrested Development Bluth’s Original Frozen Banana shirt!
But of course, like most of Target’s graphic T collection, they are all in Men’s sizes but I couldn’t give up the opportunity to get the shirt!
Who could possibly resist?
I’m usually a Women’s XS-S but the smallest one that they had was a Men’s S so I bought it and today I decided to DIY it so that it would fit my form better and it worked out just perfectly!
First I traced a fitted shirt on top of the new larger shirt and then cut the sides so it would be the same size as my fitted shirt.
Then I took the fitted shirt, got a piece of paper and outlined the sleeves. I then took the paper, cut the shape out and then proceeded to cut the shape out of the sleeves that I had just cut off from the larger shirt.
I then sewed the two right sides of the shirt and one of the sleeves together and then repeated on the other side.
After that I sewed down the sides of the shirt.
Then after I made sure it fit, I cut out the neck line to make it more feminine.
After that I turned the shirt around, made a cut in the back and made that into a bow for the back.
I then trimmed the bottom of the shirt and finished it so no seams would come lose.
I love my new shirt and Mark likes it too!
There’s ALWAYS money in the Banana Stand!
So I’ve been posting a couple fashion NO’s here and there but my classmate wore the most fabulous pants the other day and I just HAD to share!
My friend here is wearing a classic plain black tank top with a gorgeous pair of Ralph Lauren Navy blue striped capris.
This simple look paired with sandals is perfect for the beach or for everyday life.
The pants are from Savers (thrift store) and were apparently only $7!
What a steal!
So ladies, stay classy and simple and it’s a win win for everybody!
I don’t care if we live in Hawaii.
NO down to the knee sheer top/dresses people.
Not ones like these anyways…
Longer dresses not only make you look shorter but without a belt or darts worked into the outfit it also makes you look fat(ter) too.
I’m serious people.
And I don’t know if you can see in the second picture but it does nothing for your chests too.
It’s just flat down and awkward.
No more asymmetrical long in the back shapeless tops please.
And yes, I had to be a creeper to take these photos.
-Fake light blue sleeveless jean jacket
-Orange, Blue & Purple beach backpack
-Leopard jeans folded up
-Matching light blue tennis shoes
-Brown cowboy belt
-Pink (I’ve had it since high school) gel watch
What is she trying to pull off? The only two things that “match” is the color of the shoes with the vest/jacket and even that is a big FASHION NO. It looks like she’s going for a Peggy Bundy meets the 80s look. Too bad that SOUNDS cooler than it actually looks, at least on her anyways.
Ladies, when you’re going to wear a print, especially an animal print, it looks best if you match it with solid colors like white, black, grey and so on. The light blue makes everything muddled and confusing. People won’t know where to look or what to think of you. If you want to go beyond just the one animal print item the key is with the accessories. With basic solid colors you can wear accessories to bump the whole look.
Just saying ladies. Don’t make me take a picture of you on campus!
So I went and checked out Plato’s Closet so that I could do a review for the University Newspaper. This is the first Plato’s Closet and buy/sell vintage/consignment/brand store in this neck of the woods and I loved it!

Here is what I wrote for the draft. They’ll edit it before it goes in the paper but I say what I wrote is good enough for my blog!
Being from Los Angeles I love thrift stores and consignment shops so I knew that I had to give this place a visit. Very much like Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange, Plato’s Closet offers a variety of name brand clothing at more than reasonable pricing. It was like every college girl’s dream! Tons of outfits to choose from, all in either new or slightly used condition, with more than affordable prices. I would say shopping at Plato’s Closet is a lot cheaper than shopping at Forever 21 with a better selection of styles for both men and women. Plato’s Closet has done very well in the states and it was about time that they opened one in Honolulu. All the employees were more than helpful and very friendly as well. And for those of you who are worried about parking they have a private lot right in front of the store and for those students without cars it’s only about a 1.7 mile walk from campus.
The store itself is packed wall to wall with clothing and accessories. And the atmosphere is very welcoming as every customer is greeted as they walk through the door. Whether you are looking for shoes for a friend’s wedding or a clubbing outfit for the weekends, this is definitely the place to go. I saw plenty of clothes with the tags still attached selling for a mere fraction of what the original retail price was. I saw Women’s Air Jordan’s from $12-$21, a new Bebe dress for $18 and even Betsey Johnson purses for half what they would charge at Ross. And of course I couldn’t leave the store without picking up a few things for myself.
The only downside to Plato’s Closet would be to potential sellers. I have read reviews as well as asked people what their experience has been with selling their items to Plato’s Closet and more people have been disappointed with the amount of product that the store chooses to buy and for how much. Because the store sells their merchandise for such a low price it is hard for sellers to get what they think is fair for their new or gently used items. If you just want to get rid of some clothes or need quick cash then it might not hurt giving Plato’s Closet a try but most people have just found it easier to donate their unwanted items to Goodwill. I am sure that as they get more business they will be open to buying more from customers as times go on but I’ve heard that they have been pretty picky about what they choose to purchase from customers.
But overall, I had a great experience at Plato’s Closet and I can’t wait to go back soon to see what new things have come in. It’s refreshing to see a store that is affordable to the general public and to college students like myself.
And here’s what I got this time around. I picked out two dresses that I KNOW that I did NOT need to try on because I just had to have them!
I didn’t look at all the clothes or go through each rack because I knew this trip was more for school work than for pleasure but I’m sure I’ll be back there soon enough. There were sneakers and bags that I wanted but I knew that I had to pace myself.
I just need to keep reminding myself…I NEED TO SAVE FOR LAW SCHOOL!
It hasn’t been working TOO well but I’m trying. Slowly but surely. (Don’t call me Shirley!)
The first dress I fell in love with at first glance! And it’s by one of my favorite designers in LA!
The store on Melrose is called Voom and this lady makes all her clothes by hand! And they’re usually WAY too expensive for me to even consider buying anything. Her store MIGHT have closed down because of it. But I’m psyched to get a hold on this dress because I didn’t even know she had designs LIKE this.
But isn’t it just adorable?! When I saw the old school hand stitched puppies on there I KNEW this was for me!
I used to LOVE embroidery and stitch work so whenever I see dish towels or clothing with it, I can’t help but love it even more!
Paid $14 for a $100-$200 dress!!!
The next dress fits amazingly on me and the back is to die for!
And guess what ladies?
It’s a Wet Seal dress! …I know right?
And it only cost me $8!
I’m so happy with both dresses that I got and hopefully they’ll like my review too!
Yay for thrift store finds! Woo hoo!
So about a week ago I went to a local Arts and Crafts Festival in Waikiki and it wasn’t QUITE what I thought it would be but I found something pretty interesting that I doubt anyone is going to find anywhere else.
I was pacing in front of the booth wondering if I should jump on a pair or not and I’m glad that I did when I had the chance because I KNOW I would have regretted it otherwise.
These are shorts made out of old rice sacks! And yes they have lining on the inside so I’m not just wearing a sack of rice. They had a bunch of different designs but I HAD to have the ones with the crane on it. It’s just so colorful and vibrant!
They are not only very well made but by including the drawstring tie and the pocket in the back these shorts are actually functional. And surprisingly comfort is not an issue with these shorts like most would think at first glance. And what makes this piece especially unique is that it has the actual brand of rice and the address of the place it was packed for and it is right in the neighborhood of where I am living now, pretty cool huh? They also kept the original stamp that was on the bag notifying buyers of the weight of the rice by turning that into the back pocket sleeve. Simply ingenious!
Does this remind anyone else of that one ‘I Love Lucy’ episode? It was the episode where they were all in France and Ricky played a joke on Lucy by having clothes made out of potato sacks for both Lucy and Ethel. Joke was that a french designer ended up copying the idea and making his own line using potato sacks but by that time Lucy had burned her “original” because she thought she had been made a fool.
They even made a doll out of it.
Not to mention other future designers have been inspired by such fashion trends, whether they made good use of their inspiration or not is up to you.
I’m not saying that I’m going to be a trendsetter or anything like that but I just had to share this neat find with everyone. I love how people are still finding new ways to utilize everyday objects and it’s just amazing!
And I’m pretty sure they were made by the old man who was selling it to me. He had some other pretty cool stuff too…maybe I’ll pick up another pair if I ever see him again.
Now I have something to look forward to…finding unique cultural items that are made on the Island. Sounds like a challenge and I am nothing but excited for my new quest!
