HonoluluOpoly! Collectible’s Find!

2013-02-24_10-32-09_187

So Mark and I went to the 23rd Annual Hawaii Collectors Expo down the street at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

We got in for free with our military IDs today! Yay!

There were some cool and interesting things, but I need to cut down on the spending so we mostly browsed through the stalls.

But guess what I found?!

HonoluluOpoly!

Apparently it’s a Nationalopoly game and they do it to raise money for the needy people in the areas the game is produced for, which is pretty neat.

I looked it up and it was made in 1989! 24 years ago! Can you believe it?

Everything inside was still there too, give one small movable token, but that’s okay.

They have auto dealerships, the Dole plantation, hotels and even Ruth’s Chris on the board! Hahaha! Yes!

Paid $4 as you can see and I love it!

Don’t know if I want to play it or not…I might end up sending it to my cousins as a little gift. Hopefully they’ll take good care of it.

It’s nice to own a little bit of history, don’t you think?

Happy Sunday!

Oh My Glob, like it’s Happy Valentine’s Day!

560242_10151494653073383_910582053_n

I hope everyone has a good Valentine’s Day or Single’s Awareness Day or what have you!

Or you can just have a regular Thursday, it’s up to you!

Either way, I’ve been having a fun couple of days baking goodies and sharing them with friends.

I’ve also been planning a lot of activities for when Eddie comes to visit for my Graduation! We’re going to do everything!

Shark cage tours! Kayaking! Parasailing! Jet skiing! Scuba Diving!

And so we both need to save some kind of money in order to do that so I told him,

“Whenever you want a drink, just say to yourself ‘Pirate’!”

There are some shipwreck scuba diving tours so I’m going to see if I can make that happen…

And so Eddie sent me this Valentine!

Although the more I look into it, I really do think we need to be certified…

Like I said, I’ll figure it out.

I got Mark a couple sweets but he got a little munch hungry so I gave them to him a little early…

Sooo…I went out and got a few more things for him that I know he’ll like.

Cute right? The bag I got at Walmart and the Japanese snacks I got from Nijiya on my way to school this morning.

I’m so glad they all fit in there. Yay!

And here’s my little Valentine’s Day outfit for today:

Decided to go a little school girl today, just because I thought it would be cute.

Still playing around with photo editor apps but it’ll work out eventually.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

What better way to start a Monday than with a Western?

PhotoGrid_1359499821431

I am very well aware that it is Wednesday today… it just took me a while to update but better late than never right?

So the first picture is what I usually see in the mornings on my way to school. It’s been a little dark and cloudy lately and it’ll rain near campus but for the most part the weather has been very agreeable.

The corvette is probably the only nice car I’ve seen in a while and in LA I wouldn’t even count it in amongst the VERY nice cars but this is Hawaii. All the nice cars are across the street at the luxury car dealership. It was still nice to see nonetheless.

And for our film class we had to watch Shane and I was pretty lucky that it was on Netflix. I bought some pho and enjoyed the movie (as best as I could). Nothing against the movie but you know it’s hard to watch a movie when you’re at home and you have a million other things to do.

But for those of you who have not seen it yet, here is MY quick summary (without ruining it).

shane

For our film class we are moving into the Western genre and what better way to start it than with Shane. Filmed in 1953 (although my book says 1952 for some reason), Shane is a typical Western in which there is a conflict between two groups and as the movie goes on it becomes obvious that there are multiple contrasts in the movie. Like Thomas Shatz says in his book, “The film is a virtual ballet of oppositions, all perceived from Joey’s (the young boy) viewpoint”. The main conflict being with the homesteaders who are trying to be forced/scared out of their land by the ranchers. This again refers to the battle between things such as: social law versus primitive law, equality vs survival of the fittest and even much simpler things such as the future versus the past.

The main character Shane, who borders between both groups, has to try and negotiate and somehow create a sense of order. Shane is trying to leave his gunslinger past in order to work for Joe Starrett (Joey’s father), but as chaos arises and there is need for a resolution Shane is the only person able to act because the society around him is too weak to do so. “And it is these actions that finally enforce social order but necessitate his departure from the community he has saved”.

Shane is a classic Western that helps define the genre but at the same time this film also helps viewers understand the transformations that have taken place within the genre since 1953. And who doesn’t like watching gunslingers save whole towns, am I right?

So like I said, it’s on Netflix so if you have some free time on your hands, it’s definitely worth checking out!

My Saturday

PhotoGrid_1359343867572

I went to the KCC Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning but without any cash whatsoever. Why I did that? I have no idea.

I guess I just assumed that there would be an ATM there but I was greatly mistaken. And the only ATM on campus is in the cafeteria that was closed because it was the weekend. Some stands took cards but there was only one thing I wanted…Strawberry Mochi and besides ignoring me for 5 minutes he said he didn’t take cards. DARN IT!

I left dismayed and hungry so I decided to go get a drink and some breakfast at The Tea Farm near campus. I got my usually Matcha Green Tea Lemonade, which is DELICIOUS by the way, and a blueberry bagel with cream cheese. Yum!

And then I picked up a friend and we went to go see Lincoln. We both got lost along the way but we made it eventually. And like I said in the earlier post, the movie was SPECTACULAR! Go see it everybody!

And I finished my Basic Instinct paper so I was pretty happy about that as well. Got most of my homework and reading done so all in all a pretty good Saturday.

What did you guys do?

Of course it rains the day after I wash my car

PhotoGrid_1359057859837

So I washed my car (to the best of my ability) last night and OF COURSE it is raining buckets all day today.

Go figure right?

Some before and after shots. I tried to get as much tar off the tires. It was easier said than done. The back tires weren’t too bad but the front ones were HARD. And I need to buy some car wax soon because it seems like washing your car is pointless without it.

There was some damage to the paint but that can’t be helped for now.

PhotoGrid_1359068589069

And here are some pictures from the rain today. There was this cat just sitting in the rain and I tried to get it to come out so I could take care of it but it wouldn’t budge from its spot so I just had to leave. I had no way of getting around the fence it was in.

It’s cleared up a lot right now but thank god I’ve been carrying around my umbrella lately because otherwise I would have been soaked MORE than I already was with the sideways rain and everything.

It’s just another thing in life. The world HAS to rain on you when you’ve washed your car. It is what it is.

All I do is eat…

154194_10200353243210507_1820372036_n

So yesterday I woke up a little early so I could go get some breakfast pastries for Mark, myself and Olivo.

I drove down to Liliha Bakery which is pretty close by if I use the freeway. I’m sure there are other bakeries in the neighborhood that I need to try out but I always get so paranoid about trying to go to new places because I’m always worried I’m going to overshoot the actual location and have to make SEVERAL loops around the block to find the place AND/OR there is no parking ANYWHERE!

I have a legitimate reason to be paranoid because I feel like not having a parking space and overshooting a location is all I do in my car. I’m usually VERY good with directions but everything is on a one way street that like either leads to a freeway on ramp (that I do not want to go on) OR there is no opportunity to turn around to get back to where I was.

I got some donuts, a chocolate cream puff, an eclair, an apple turnover AND MY FAVORITE a sweet potato crescent. I swear I only get like two things at this place. The blueberry scone and the sweet potato crescent. It seriously reminds me of my time in Japan and I just love it!

Also testing out some photo apps on my phone. I feel as though I’m not sufficiently Asian enough to have already mastered every photo app out there to make my skin brighter or my eyes wider but I’m working on it! Hahaha.

But after chillaxing at home Olivo and I decided to take a walk down to Chinatown to look around and to see if there was anything worth buying from the Macy’s that is closing.

399005_10200354218474888_1607575987_n

I was SO excited once I got to the little Chinese markets. I felt like I was back home again! They had all my favorite foods!

I bought two packets of instant noodles that Olivo SAID were spicy (because I love spicy food) BUT they weren’t spicy at all! She lied! I had to put a shit ton of Sriracha into it before I could eat it.

Also bought Strawberry Cakes! Olivo brought me all different flavors and I just loved them! They’re kind of like Fig Newtons but better! Tastier with a wide range of flavors!

I also bought a bag of peeled roasted chestnuts and needless to say I had finished it way too quickly. I absolutely LOVE chestnuts! I think I could live off of them if I had to. My mother and grandmother always bring them when they come to visit but they never last very long. But now that I know I can get it in Chinatown I am definitely going to go by more often!

AND I also bought Almond Jello Mix! They serve it as dessert in Chinese restaurants and it is SO DELICIOUS! I usually don’t care for Jello but I’ve always loved getting this at the end of every Chinese meal! I can’t wait to try it at home!!!

PhotoGrid_1358724217480

And this morning we watched the end of the Lakers vs Raptors game as well as both NFL games. And of course I wake up to the Lakers losing…to a team that is not even anywhere near playoffs! It just hurts to be a Lakers fan right now… I think I might start up a:

“NO DWIGHT 2013”

campaign soon.

But I also made some Cinnamon Tortilla crisps this morning since I hadn’t in a long time. Also made an experimental tortilla pizza with salsa, parmesan, mozzarella and pepperoni and it turned out pretty good! The only issue was that the salsa I used was SUPER SPICY so the pizza ended up being super spicy so I just need to be mindful of that next time.

I can’t believe both the 49ers AND the Ravens are going to the Superbowl. I guess you got your birthday wish Austin.

We’ll get there next year Broncos! I believe in you Peyton!

After that Mark and I went to Walmart and got our groceries for the week and when we came home Olivo was back so we decided to go out and get dinner.

PhotoGrid_1358754440945 (1)

Olivo wanted to get a Loco Moco so I thought we could try Like Like Drive Inn. I’ve always driven by it but I’ve never been there so I’m glad I had an excuse to go. Olivo got the Loco Moco and I got the Oxtail which came with a soup, salad, drink and dessert!

Surprisingly my dish was pretty good. I do love Oxtail and I haven’t had any since I was in Hong Kong. The dish itself came with mashed potatoes and corn (which I also very much love). I gave the salad to Olivo since I despise the very existence of salad and I had the spinach soup as an appetizer. The soup wasn’t bad but I’m not quite sure what to think about it. It was…different. And for dessert I asked for a recommendation and she brought me the blueberry ice cream. I usually don’t like ice cream but it was actually really flavorful and surprisingly smooth.

I really do need to start back at the gym…

Plato’s Closet – Honolulu

2013-01-17_13-47-21_535
So I went and checked out Plato’s Closet so that I could do a review for the University Newspaper. This is the first Plato’s Closet and buy/sell vintage/consignment/brand store in this neck of the woods and I loved it!

Here is the information for the location:

Plato’s Closet

2013-01-17_13-48-27_349

Here is what I wrote for the draft. They’ll edit it before it goes in the paper but I say what I wrote is good enough for my blog!

Being from Los Angeles I love thrift stores and consignment shops so I knew that I had to give this place a visit. Very much like Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange, Plato’s Closet offers a variety of name brand clothing at more than reasonable pricing. It was like every college girl’s dream! Tons of outfits to choose from, all in either new or slightly used condition, with more than affordable prices. I would say shopping at Plato’s Closet is a lot cheaper than shopping at Forever 21 with a better selection of styles for both men and women. Plato’s Closet has done very well in the states and it was about time that they opened one in Honolulu. All the employees were more than helpful and very friendly as well. And for those of you who are worried about parking they have a private lot right in front of the store and for those students without cars it’s only about a 1.7 mile walk from campus.

The store itself is packed wall to wall with clothing and accessories. And the atmosphere is very welcoming as every customer is greeted as they walk through the door. Whether you are looking for shoes for a friend’s wedding or a clubbing outfit for the weekends, this is definitely the place to go. I saw plenty of clothes with the tags still attached selling for a mere fraction of what the original retail price was. I saw Women’s Air Jordan’s from $12-$21, a new Bebe dress for $18 and even Betsey Johnson purses for half what they would charge at Ross. And of course I couldn’t leave the store without picking up a few things for myself.

The only downside to Plato’s Closet would be to potential sellers. I have read reviews as well as asked people what their experience has been with selling their items to Plato’s Closet and more people have been disappointed with the amount of product that the store chooses to buy and for how much. Because the store sells their merchandise for such a low price it is hard for sellers to get what they think is fair for their new or gently used items. If you just want to get rid of some clothes or need quick cash then it might not hurt giving Plato’s Closet a try but most people have just found it easier to donate their unwanted items to Goodwill. I am sure that as they get more business they will be open to buying more from customers as times go on but I’ve heard that they have been pretty picky about what they choose to purchase from customers.

But overall, I had a great experience at Plato’s Closet and I can’t wait to go back soon to see what new things have come in. It’s refreshing to see a store that is affordable to the general public and to college students like myself.

And here’s what I got this time around. I picked out two dresses that I KNOW that I did NOT need to try on because I just had to have them!

I didn’t look at all the clothes or go through each rack because I knew this trip was more for school work than for pleasure but I’m sure I’ll be back there soon enough. There were sneakers and bags that I wanted but I knew that I had to pace myself.

I just need to keep reminding myself…I NEED TO SAVE FOR LAW SCHOOL!

It hasn’t been working TOO well but I’m trying. Slowly but surely. (Don’t call me Shirley!)

But anyways…

The first dress I fell in love with at first glance! And it’s by one of my favorite designers in LA!

The store on Melrose is called Voom and this lady makes all her clothes by hand! And they’re usually WAY too expensive for me to even consider buying anything. Her store MIGHT have closed down because of it. But I’m psyched to get a hold on this dress because I didn’t even know she had designs LIKE this.

2013-01-18_23-07-38_220
Excuse all the wrinkles.

But isn’t it just adorable?! When I saw the old school hand stitched puppies on there I KNEW this was for me!

I used to LOVE embroidery and stitch work so whenever I see dish towels or clothing with it, I can’t help but love it even more!

Paid $14 for a $100-$200 dress!!!

The next dress fits amazingly on me and the back is to die for!

2013-01-18_23-09-06_489

And guess what ladies?

It’s a Wet Seal dress! …I know right?

2013-01-18_23-09-40_497

And it only cost me $8!

I’m so happy with both dresses that I got and hopefully they’ll like my review too!

Yay for thrift store finds! Woo hoo!
