I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that

We were supposed to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey so we could discuss it in class today and I really enjoyed the movie.

I know it came out in 1968 and is listed as one of those MUST SEE movies but I had never gotten around to it till yesterday.

A shame, I know.

But I’m glad I was finally able to watch it.

It’s just funny to think that I’ve seen so many parodies and spoofs of the HAL 9000 without even knowing what it was referencing back to.

And of course I had to share the classic scene where HAL is being deactivated which represents not only his regression back to a state of childhood or otherwise primitive state but also the “murder” that Dave is committing which reflects the “Dawn of Man” scene where one ape is seen murdering another in order to gain control of the watering hole. When HAL begins to sing Daisy it shows a different side to him, one that isn’t completely emotionless when speaking, he is taken back to a simple entity.

But I couldn’t end this without posting some of my favorite parodies of HAL.

When Bender falls in love with the ship:

treehouseofhorror12_07

I can’t find the Ultrahouse 3000 Simpsons clip on Youtube so I guess a picture of it will have to do.

But before I go, one more thing.

images (3)

So my teacher stopped the film at this point and asked everyone what they thought that this exact moment with the monolith meant.

Of course there are a million different explanations that people will explore but the most common would be that this not only signifies the “dawn” of man because of the sun seeming to appear from one side of the monolith, but also the path that the apes will take to become human and then eventually travel to the next frontier which is the moon. Where, of course, there will be yet another monolith to guide the next step of the journey of man.

But all this aside, this old lady that we have in our class always tends to give answers that are either: a) irrelevant, b) far from the point, or c) blatantly obvious, and today was no different.

When the teacher stopped the film at this point she says that only someone with the same immense knowledge of religion would be able to decipher that this exact moment is not only the 3rd day in Genesis but also connected to the ideas of the Cold War.

Needless to say, we all couldn’t help but burst out laughing. At least she didn’t cry in class today. That’s some sort of a win right?

Valentine’s Day Hershey’s Kiss Peanut Butter Cookies!

2013-02-12_13-50-41_393
I made some Peanut Butter cookies with Swirl Hershey’s Kisses today for Valentine’s Day!

I know V-day is on Thursday but there are some people I only see on Wednesdays so I thought I should bake some goodies a little early so that I could share them with everyone!

Mark has been devouring them like hot cakes! Haha.

So here is the recipe!

Ingredients:

-1/2 cup shortening

-3/4 cup peanut butter

-1/3 cup white sugar

-1/3 cup brown sugar

-1 egg

-2 tablespoons milk

-1 1/2 cups flour

-1 teaspoon baking soda

-1/2 teaspoon salt

-A little extra white sugar to roll the cookie dough in

-At least 30 Hershey’s Kisses (doesn’t hurt to have more just in case) 1 bag is more than enough

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

2. Mix the shortening and the peanut butter.

You can use a mixer but since mine has not come in the mail I just folded them together and it worked out great!

3. Mix in sugars and fold/mix until light and fluffy.

4. Add the egg, milk and vanilla. Continue to beat/mix well.

5. In a separate smaller bowl combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Gradually mix the dry mix into the peanut butter mixture.

6. Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and roll them in the extra white sugar.

7. Place the sugared dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for about 8-10 minutes.

They will come out looking about the same shape that they had when you put them in, but don’t be alarmed.

8. While the cookies are baking, unwrap however many Hershey’s Kisses that you need so that you will have them ready when the cookies are done baking.

9. Pull out the cookies, they should be lightly browned, and immediately place a Hershey’s Kiss on each cookie and press down slightly.

This will give it the flat cookie shape.

You can use whatever flavor Kisses that you like. I think they’re just a little more colorful with the Swirl Kisses.

You can either enjoy them at home or do what I did and gently place them in little plastic bags and tie a red ribbon on top.

2013-02-12_14-57-25_467

As a warning though, be careful when you package them because it will take some time for the Kisses to harden again. They will be melty for quite a while. But that’s what makes it so delicious right?

Enjoy and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Fashion NO of the Day

2013-02-04_13-31-46_170

2013-02-04_13-32-02_449

2013-02-04_13-32-07_819

I don’t care if we live in Hawaii.

NO down to the knee sheer top/dresses people.

Not ones like these anyways…

Longer dresses not only make you look shorter but without a belt or darts worked into the outfit it also makes you look fat(ter) too.

I’m serious people.

And I don’t know if you can see in the second picture but it does nothing for your chests too.

It’s just flat down and awkward.

No more asymmetrical long in the back shapeless tops please.

And yes, I had to be a creeper to take these photos.

Comet Lecture

n9Hyakutake
I listened to a lecture on why Comets are so great and it was pretty interesting!

The picture above is of Comet Hyakutake seen from Hawaii in 1996.

Beautiful shot isn’t it?

Hawaii is the home of many of the world’s finest observatories and what better way to get ready for comet viewings coming up in March than to have a lecture to explain what it is that we will see.

I won’t go over the WHOLE lecture with you guys but I know it’s cool to learn a neat fact here and there so here are some cool ones that you can share with your friends and family.

-Comets are made completely out of ice and when they get in close proximity of the Sun the ice on the surface starts to sublimate, turning directly from a solid to a gas. The gas then streams away creating comet dust which are the tails and comas of the comet.

-And these same comet tails always point away from the sun.

-Comets also have orbits but the paths deviate from the traditional circular orbit. Which means that there is no set orbit for comets.

Hope you guys learned a little something!

Mall of America Finds

Mall of America_1_0

So during our trip to Minneapolis we stopped by the Mall of America again so I could do some shopping! Yay!

It’ was my third time there and I STILL don’t think I’ve seen everything that mall has to offer!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the place it is THE largest Mall in America.

It literally is the “MALL OF AMERICA”. Haha.

It has a theme park in the middle with rides, an aquarium, mini golf, multiple food courts…it’s just humongous!

entrance

And ladies, there is NO Sales Tax on clothing or shoes! Can you believe it!!!

Thank the baby lord Jesus right?

Well I just wanted to share with you guys some of the cute stuff that I found there since the shopping selection can be kind of limited at times in Hawaii as well as ridiculously overpriced.

First I went to this store called ‘Garage’ and I was immediately drawn to it! I ended up buying 3 things so I think I did pretty good.

2013-01-02_15-45-33_244

First I found these adorable shorts that fade from light blue to white. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a weakness for short shorts!

And after being in Minnesota for 3 weeks I am ready for some warm Hawaii weather!

Usually I don’t like cut off shorts because they tend to make legs look a little bit thicker where it is cut off but Mark convinced me that it looks okay so I thought I might give it a go.

2013-01-02_15-47-19_977

And lately I’ve been getting into long sleeve button down shirts and I thought this one was just perfect for the summer weather. I especially love it because it’s 100% cotton and it breathes pretty nicely.

2013-01-02_15-50-10_146

Sorry the picture is sort of blurry on this one but it really is quite adorable in person. This sheer top is perfect over a bikini top or a regular bra!

I think they tried to sell me a tank top to wear under the shirt but…

AIN’T NOBODY GOT NO TIME FOR THAT!

After that I went in to Lola. I was so surprised that they had it in MOA!

I used to go to Lola when I was in Vegas and that was about it. I didn’t think they had set up shop anywhere else.

They were having a super sale just like everyone else so I got this basic green tank top that was $20 for $5! Score!

Everything else in the store was either for warm weather or too sparkly for me. But I’m happy with what I got!

2013-01-02_15-46-05_259

And how can I go into any mall without going into Tillys!

I usually go to grab cute underwear and Metal Mulisha clothes but this time I found a cute top instead.

I’m pretty picky about floral prints but I thought this one was pretty calm and not too out there.

I’m not crazy about the back with the butterfly looking cutout but I’ll live with it.

I think I have a new outfit for school! Yay!

2013-01-02_15-51-13_794

Speaking of which, I need to figure out where my classes are this semester…Hahaha.

I don’t think I even know. Hmmm…

And we went to Lindt to get some chocolate for the family like we always do!

But this time Mark wasn’t feeling too well so we headed back to the hotel pretty early but I still had a blast!!

Just a picture of my two favorite furry buddies

So school started yesterday and it’s okay so far. I have 6 classes this semester so I have to make sure I stay on top of my shit, if you know what I mean. I have 3 English classes, 1 Art History class, 1 Anthropology class and 1 Philosophy class which is more like a math class because we’re learning deductive logic. I was really worried about this class but I soon realized it was just like my LSAT prep courses so I’m not TOO worried anymore. Yay!

I’ve been trying to bake more to keep my mind off of stress and it’s been helping quite a bit. I’m sure writing more on my blog will relieve more of my stress so I have to make sure to keep on that as well.

And most of all, I need to make sure I stay motivated throughout the whole semester. If I have to come up with incentives and rewards to keep myself going then that is just what I am going to do!

OH! And I’m going to start crafting again too! Hoorah! I ordered some supplies in the mail so I should be started on some projects very shortly.

But anyways, pictures like the one above really help me get through the day. I’m really glad my mother has been sending them to me. I have the most awesome cat in the world and Lala is pretty cute as well. I’ll call my mother and she’ll put the phone down so I can talk to Lala for a bit too. (Not like she understands but she turns her neck every which way to look for me). I miss my babies! AH!

MIA

Hey you guys. Sorry I’ve been M.I.A. lately. A lot has been going on.

So here’s a list of things I missed blogging about:

-USA Men’s Basketball winning Gold at the Olympics

-What an awesome year this has been for Lebron James

Is that it? Maybe. I start school tomorrow which I’m not REALLY looking forward to. I have to park off-campus AND take a shuttle AND take all 6 of my classes in one day. But it could be worse.

But in other news, guess what I saw at Ben Franklin crafts the other day?

Just about made my day. I promise I will write more soon.

OMG AND DWIGHT HOWARD IS ON THE LAKERS. EPIC FAIL.

“You can’t just put HE MAN in TRANSFORMER’S world. All right?

He wouldn’t be able to get to Cybertron because he lives in Eternia and Eternia is in an entirely different dimension!” -Stewie from Family Guy

Anyways, I just thought I’d throw that in there because what better way to start any speech or essay than with a historic quote! Yeah…I thought it was pretty awesome too. It really speaks to me, you know? Stewie is stopping Brian’s second imagination from coming into play to achieve a whole new level of thought processes and ideas. Stewie is stuck in a paradox in which he envisions the creation of activities and events within the Transformer world but by being so focused on technicalities he is unable to expand beyond what SHOULD be into further exploring the possibilities of what COULD be. Who is Stewie to say that He Man could not learn how to fly or indeed, as Brian puts it, get on a rocket to visit his fellow crime fighting heroes in a new and unexplored part of the dimension? Maybe this new wave of thinking initiated by Brian’s want to be included can lead to the deconstruction of what makes up a super hero in order to rebuild an even greater protagonist that is able to span several aspects of both time and space in relation to their surroundings. By not involving Brian in this children’s activity meant to spurt creativity and mental awareness, Stewie has not only stunted his own potential growth but also the potential growth that could have developed through such interactions.

Am I being serious? Who knows…Maybe this should blog should be called the “Ramblings of an English Major” but then I don’t think anyone would read it. *shrug*

Anyways, my mother had her friends over last night and no it was not to watch the Super Bowl. Although that would have been really cool if they WERE here to watch it. But I don’t know if any of the TVs in the house work too well. I haven’t watched TV in forever! But, getting back to the point, one of her friends brought some cookies for me! They’re actually pretty good. And who couldn’t love cookies tied in Lakers colors. Ugh Lakers…I’ll talk about that later…

Actually, I’m going to talk about it now. I even wore my “Boston Sucks” shirt today…but I guess it wasn’t enough to help them…

Mike Brown got suspended for a game for his little fiasco during the Jazz game, maybe that will makes things better. We can only hope right? I knew it was going to be a good game when I saw they’d be playing the 76ers but I didn’t want them to lose… I had class when the game was on so I had to keep up with the play by plays that I could get on my phone. They were so close the entire game. The whole time I was on it they were only 1-3 points apart. The game stats aren’t even that impressive. This has to be one of Iguodala’s lower scoring games AND WE STILL LOST. But in all fairness it was a low scoring game in general for everyone. Ugh…There were some other good games tonight. Knicks beat the Jazz and the Clippers had a very close game with the Magic but ended up coming ahead by 5 points. The Thunder vs Trailblazers game has been pretty intense too. It’s still anyone’s game. But you have my support KD! You can do this! But KD come on…FGM-A 9-17 is not okay. We’ll see how it ends up panning out later on. And before I move on to another topic…what was with the Heat’s jersey last night?

Do we really need 5 colors on a jersey? Let alone an asymmetrical design? AND they’re selling them on NBA.com. Here’s what the stock photo looks like:

Can you say ‘EW’?

1. The number and writing on the front and back are off center.

2. The colors include: Red, Black, White, Pink and Orange. It’s like a defective unicorn threw up on a blank sports jersey. What do the last two colors have to do with the heat? Degrees of colors leading up to how hot a flame gets? Makes for a dramatic picture that’s for sure.

3. Pink really? Good luck trying to sell these to your target market.

4. What is with the font on the front? I know teams can pick or choose when they want to put the city name and the team’s name but this looks like something out of Ken’s Spring Catalogue while he shops for clothes while Barbie is out being an independent woman.

5. Is it just me or did Adidas purposely make it look sort of like a soccer jersey? Can someone say Product Placement?

6. What happened to simplicity? Whoever designed this jersey has either been transferred over from another sports department or the recession along with the lockout has really been hitting both Adidas and the NBA so hard that they’ve outsourced their work to interns who are forced to scribble jersey ideas in between coffee runs for the rest of the office. (*Intern idea thanks to Mark, credit where credit is due*)

Oh well. I can just buy an All Star Jersey (which also lacks any new creative ingenuity) but I guess some things really can’t be helped. I’ll complain about it another time I guess. OH BUT those new Black on Black jerseys that have been coming out are pretty sweet. I’ll write my review about them next time. Don’t want to overload anyone with too much new sensory information.

And before I forget, Amare’s brother was killed in a car accident this morning so keep him in your thoughts? I guess it’s good the Knicks won a game today then right?

Moving onto a new topic, I ordered all my transcripts so I can transfer school starting next fall. Everything seemed to work out smooth so hopefully it will just stay that way. Yay for being productive! We also did some explication work in class today. There were some pretty good lines from Richard III to be honest. The class helped a lot because I have an explication due tomorrow on Madame Bovary. It’ll be a piece of cake though. My other class went well too. I ended up getting an A on the paper I had written on Plato and Aristotle which I’m happy about and I managed to pay attention in class while checking NBA score updates on my phone. Yay for multitasking!

But enough about school…it’s car time! My bestest buddy Jack and I always swap pictures of cars that we see throughout the day and guess what he sent me today? It has to be only my 3rd favorite car at this point in time…that’s right! You guessed it! A Volvo 1800S! (Actually my favorite is a Volvo p1800 but it’s close enough). And it’s from 1967 too…*drool*

God look at it! It’s in PRISTINE condition too! This is BY FAR the only cool car Volvo has ever made or will ever make. The person who owns this car has obviously taken care of it like it’s their own kid. Makes me so happy to see vintage cars in top shape. It gives me hope! We’re not dying out…soon you can see me in one of these. True I’ll have to get used to the 4 cylinder engine and the manual transmission but it’s all worth it for a beauty like this one.

What did Roger Moore drive on “The Saint” before he ever became James Bond? One of these bad boys, that’s right. In the TV Series he was seen sporting this bad ass baby. Forget about the Aston Martin DB5, it’s all about the 1800S! (*And again photo credits to Jack, I’m going to miss you!!*)

And while I’m on the subject, Jack, I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip! If you see any strange and/or exotic cars you know that I expect pictures when you get back! Don’t die!! I won’t miss the Vegan food but I sure as hell will miss you! And our amazing conversations about the aesthetic values of cars. Have fun!!

Now that I have spent a substantial part of my night writing and completing this blog entry, I think it’s time for me to actually attend to things that desperately need my attention. Bye until next time!
